Very strange Steering Situation

I recently took my 2001 BMW x5 4.4i in for some work. I replaced a DSC module which had failed, a speed sensor that had failed, and had a new head gasket installed, and had a leak in the transfer case repaired.

I had two other issues. The first was a slowly leaking radiator. The second was that my steering was obstructed when I got to either the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock positions. Both BMW and my indie shop diagnosed it as a bad steering rack. I had the rack replaced. I waited on the radiator because it wasn't covered on my warranty and the indie shop was quoting me a ridiculous price.

After replacement of the steering rack, the indie shop called me and told me the problem was still there and they would need to take apart the steering column, which may or may not be covered under my warranty. Having become thoroughly frustrated with the indie shop for taking a month to fix my other problems and trying to upcharge me at every turn, I declined.

When I picked up the vehicle, the problem was there. Steering still bound up at 3 and 9 despite the new rack. The radiator leak was also much worse (because the indie shop replaced a hose and cracked the top). I replaced the radiator at a local radiator shop for less than 50% of what the indie shop quoted. When I picked it up I noticed that the steering problem had completely vanished.

Anyone have any insight on this? Could the leeking coolant have affected a steering component? Does it just take time to break in a new steering rack? I have to admit that I am baffled.

The binding in the steering is going to be from the double joint on the steering spindle under the hood. I see that from time to time and an easy way to make sure that is it would be to spray the joint with penetrating lube (something better than wd40 like kroil or pb blaster) and see if the binding goes away.

#2, seen under hood.

Thanks for the information. I will try to check it out this weekend. Any idea why the problem would just go away on its own?

It does seem to come and go at times, even on my truck. Whenever it comes up I hit it with a shot of penetrating oil and it goes away for another half a year or so. I'd imagine different weather/temperatures would have an affect on it as well.
