new x5 owner with pulley questions...

Hi all,

I can't even tell you how helpful this website has been for our x5. I have been searching for info on a noisy (i think) idler pulley . Is there any need for me to buy a new tensioner assembly as well? RealOEM.com Diagram Selection . Our X5 is an '03 3.0i Sport. I'm having a hell of a time getting the fan/clutch assembly off, and ended up breaking a fin off of the fan, so i'm ordering one of those too (unless it's safe to run it with one fin missing, but I'm assuming it isn't). Any tips to get it off easier? The RealOEM site shows three belts, is this accurate? I can't see in there yet. It looks as if the top two on the above link have the same narrative "BELT DRIVE WATER PUMP/ALTERNATOR" but obviously are different diagrams. Oh yea, since i'm new to the RealOEM website, and not sure how many idler pulleys there are, do i need more than one?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you all might have for me.

Let us no how hard a job it was. Mine have been squaeking for a few months now. I have looked at it and read all the threads. and it looks pretty involved to this noveice wrench turner. I will need to address this in the spring.

additionally - the fan is reverse threaded

You need something to hold the pulley. You can really use anything, though the tool makes it easy. Basically, on the pulley you press left real hard on one of the 4 bolt heads with the tool and pull right with the 32mm (iirc) wrench on the nut attached to the fan

so, being reverse threaded I would loosen it in which direction? is the nut on the fan clutch or the engine pulley?

well much like reverse threaded sounds. You will turn right to loosen it. Opposite of the 'righty tighty' rule.

The nut is attached to the fan itself. The fan will spin when you loosen. Put the 32mm (or 36mm - I cant remember) on the nut and pull towards the drivers side to loosen the bolt. Again, you'll need something to push against the nuts on the pulley to stop it from spinning with the fan/nut. Obviously, the BMW tool works the best, but it can be done without it. Maybe with a long flat-head.

See my sweet drawing below to further illustrate

edit: I got beat to the punch. Spent too much time making that sweet pic

The pic was worth the wait! I ordered all of the parts from ecstuning, just waiting for them to arrive.
