Besides and FX35/50, what's a good replacement for an X5 in terms of performance w/ better reliability?

I would say you couldn't go wrong with either the rx350 or the MDX in terms of reliability. It's going to be hard to find another SUV to handle like the X. However, with that being said, I don't know of any Lexus or Acura SUV that comes with 20" rims and 315/35 tires on it which if you ask me has a lot to do with handling. I would love to drive a Japanese SUV with this type of tire combination on it. Who knows, it may be close to the X.
Regarding the subject of the post "Biggest Repair Bill Competition," I can't compete with any of you 5 figure guys but I do have my own little private competition at my house and the X wins that one by far. In fact, I have spent more money on repairing my X than on all my other cars/motorcycles put together . . . and that includes my repo truck. What's more is that the X has only 63K miles on it now. Of course all my other vehicles are Japanese and the one that is not Japanese has a Cummins Diesel under the hood (bulletproof). If I did run into a repair bill close to what some people posted about, I wouldn't be writing about it here. I would be writing to BMW to tell them what a POS their vehicles are and to educate them on a word they probably have not heard before . . . RELIABILITY.

Someone I know just authorized $24,000 for a new engine in his 2002 4.4i.
He wins. And by wins, I mean loses.

In a word, nothing. No SUV drives as nice as a BMW. However, if you're looking for a comfy, well-built SUV, the Acura MDX is great. I recently worked on one, and its build quality is impeccable.
