3.0i Tensioner Pulley questions
I have a 2001 3.0i. I'm pretty sure my car has the mechanical tensioner pulley--does anyone know for sure what they put in the 2001s? Without pulling my fan shroud and fan and just peeking in there with a flash light I don't think I see the little hydraulic arm above the pulley like I've seen in pictures. My questions are: 1) to replace the pulley when it's a mechanical pulley, is it true that you can't just buy the pulley wheel and need to buy the whole assembly? 2) should I go ahead and just upgrade the tensioner pulley to the hydraulic pulley? 3) do the accessory belt and a/c belt use the same tensioner pulleys? Thanks for any answers!

1 - You can replace the pulley seperately. Part # 11 28 7 841 228
2- Really up to you if you want to replace it with a hydro unit. I would replace it once the tensioner is worn out. 3- No, different tensioner pullies. And the 01's have mechanical tensioners. |

Thanks for the help. Do you know what part number I need for the AC belt tensioner pulley?

Yes and no. For a year I've had that special start up squeal that many members here have complained about. It's the one that only happens at the cold start in the morning--you start the car and about 3 seconds later there is a squeal from the engine compartment and then is gone in about 15 seconds. It's always bothered me but I've just lived with it.
But I have 90K on my car now and I'm doing the inspection I service along with replacing my cooling system (water pump--never been done!, hoses, already did the thermostat a year or so ago) and belts (4 year interval is up) and pulleys (never been done) and brake fluid (never been done) and fuel filter and an oil change. I can't seem to find a part number anywhere for the A/C compressor belt pulley anywhere. Any help will be appreciated. |

Thanks. But that's for the whole tensioner assembly. I just want the pulley--if you can buy just the pulley?--the poster above seems think I can get just the pulleys which he was right about the accessory belt tensioner but I can't seem to locate one for the A/C belt tensioner.

If you dont want to change from mechanical tensioners to Hydraulic tensioners
than you need these parts #. Tensioner for AC Belt pulley. Part # : 11 28 1 433 571 Tensioner for Water Pump / Alternator Belt Part # : 11 28 1 427 252 Deflection roller. Part# 11 28 1 748 130. Note: you can not buy just the pulleys any more. |

Thanks for all the part numbers. Another question for everyone: the pulleys on the a/c compressor, water pump, and power steering pump are plastic from what I've read. Do they need to be replaced ever? Has anyone ever experienced one shattering or breaking apart. There seems to be replacements that are metal for the same price as the plastic ones.
