Code P0340, the engine stalls, need some help
I already feel dizzy going thru tens of post about this issue and I'm still puzzled. For anyone that has ever had this code could you tell me what you ended up changing? Some say it's the intake cam sensor. Others the exhaust cam sensor. A few talk about MAF sensor. I wouldn't want to change half engine to realize is something else. So for people that had this problem could you point me to the right sensor? btw: I had the check engine light On this morning, and read the codes with an OBD reader. The reader came up with code P0340. The car was kind of sluggish. I erased the code, everything was fine for about 10-15 miles and then after I started the car it would stall right away. I got home trying to keep the engine running every time I stopped to a red light. While driving even if I pushed the acceleration all way down the car won't have the power to accelerate. One more thing. The car stalled the first time about 2 weeks ago. I thought it was a one time thing. Anyway, sorry for the long post, can anyone help?

update: the day I posted this I took the chance and changed the intake cam sensor (right side as you face the engine) and 3 weeks later everything has been fine so far. no codes or stalling since. the sensor was $92 at Advance Auto Parts ($40 online but it was Saturday and I needed the car done by Monday). the intake sensor has a cord while the exhaust one doesn't. if you order it over the phone make sure you order the right part. it looks almost the same as the original one except the part that goes inside the engine. tight fit while the original one had the tip narrower.
a couple notes. you have to remove the solenoid. to do that you need a little leverage so the best is to remove the oil filter cap, then the solenoid and then the sensor. btw: you need a 32mm wrench to remove the solenoid. that's about all.

LOL...tens of posts, but instead of replying on one of those threads to keep the information consolidated into one less fewer thread, you made another one for people to sort through. Classic.
Glad you got it sorted it though.

Neither you or I said Xoutpost, so I don't understand the question.

Sorry to bump an old thread, I paid .25c just to reply!
youry: Thanks for posting up this info. Like you I searched online and found a random mish mash of info about this P0340 code on my '01 X5 3.0. I'd love it if you could post the part number and the direct link to where you bought it from! m5james: Why do you have to be so rude? His post has already reached someone (me) who has never heard of xoutpost.com before. He has the most definitive information yet online about the P0340 on the X5. He's helped xoutpost.com generate hits (and quarters) from unique visitors like me with problems and you've helped waste bandwidth complaining about it. It's people like you who make reading useful threads more difficult with your unnecessary banter. I'd delete them if I were you for future P0340 searchers like me to make it easier on society. |

Spend enough time here and/or spend time searching and when you see the same thread over and over again, you just get tired of seeing it. I realize I didn't have to reply and could have just ignored it since eventually he'd find the answer himself or within other posts of the exact same topic, but I replied after the OP himself complained about going through countless threads, so I thought it was ironic that he essentially did the same thing he complained about. If he wants to make 10 posts about the same topic that's his prerogative...but don't complain about the system while he's doing the same thing that is making it as disorganized as it is. Last but not least, it's the WWW, so don't take it personal...I asked why he added to the madness he complained about, then I said congrats on getting it figured out. I like a clean house for myself and others...how is that so wrong? I'm all for bumping old posts, but to drag up old baggage that isn't even directed at you...c'mon now.
Why did you pay to be here in the first place...unless your chose a Premier Membership, it's absolutely free to be here and Google will 9x out of 10 bring you to this site. Where in WA are you, it's kind of a big state. I'm in Edmonds, so maybe I can help you with your issue in exchange for whatever I may have done wrong.

second one on this link. the one that I got from Advance Auto parts does the same thing but the sensor is a little different though it fits perfectly. Camshaft Position/Reference Mark Sensor make sure you order the one with harness, which is on the right side as you face the engine. number 18 in this picture RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i Cylinder Head Vanos you'll have to remove the Solenoid valve (#2 in the above picture) in order to remove the sensor
