Thank you, I think you are right. I noticed if I move it to the left a little it would go into drive. How hard is it to remove the lever cover?

just pull up. its only clipped in.

Yes I pushed to the left and it would work, so I just dremeled the right side of the clip a little to allow the pipe to slide in properly. And yes the plastic and leather comes out as one piece.
