+1 on the goodwill approach. Maybe give BMWNA a ring and see what they may say.

If you're going to install a used engine, I'd go ahead and replace all the gaskets (valve cover, oil pan...you're going to have to do this anyway, since the oil pan will be different, rear main seal) and the f#$#ing oil separator valve too. Easier to do maintenance with the engine out of the vehicle.

Good luck,
Dan

BMWNA doesn't exist in Canada. Don't take no for an answer. Why did it spin a rod? Oil starvation? Improper oil services? Or Manufacturing defect.

more money!!! I guess I stupidly thought that buying a used engine would be a direct swap and any missing components could be found and fitted from my screwed engine. What other costs am I gonna run into here?

Engine+ lab+ WHAT?

Also...
I did bring up doing a goodwill repair but all they kept bringing up is that my engine leaks and the car is way out of warranty. I am quite sure this dealership won't even entertain the possibility of a goodwill repair. I will take another stab at it.

not to be pushy on the same subject, but how did your engine mess up? I see you have a 2004 3.0, just like I do, you got me worried, what should I do so this wont happen to anyone else?

Bottom line the oil was degraded and too low. This was partly my fault though other factors contributed That left me with no second chance and hence the need for a new engine.

if you Change your oil and filter regularily and check the oil level and look for leaks frequently you will be fine.

From what I read recently the 3.0 burns oil like crazy.

Can anybody enlighten me on what can and cannot be salvaged from the old engine. Obviously I want to reduce as much cost as possible.

Another thing that came to mind is that the wiring harness from both engines will be different. For example, the harness that goes to the ignition coils will be different. I think they changed for the MY04. You may have to swap harnesses, oil pan....don't know if the exhaust manifolds will be the same or not.

I spoke to bav auto and the guy i spoke to said it would be a direct swap of the engine and all parts would be transferable from the old engine to the 330 engine. The 330 oil pan is different but he said the x5 oil pan can be swapped in and the oil pump will have to be swapped.

Will it be obvious if I need a new oil pump after looking at the old one?

Crap, this has got me worried. I have a rattle right now that I hear mainly when the vehicle is in gear but idling - seems to go away if I put it in Park and when I give it gas. Engine still runs great.

Recently I got the low oil light while I was driving - never saw the oil light that you initally get upon shutdown. Had been 3k miles since my oil change.

Will be taking it in the shop in the next week or so. God I hope it is not the engine...

I am pretty sure your engine is fine. If you do require repairs I doubt its going to involve a new $12000 engine. When you think about It, I have run into the worst possible repair in terms if cost and time. It really can't get any worst than this until it's a write off.

Of course the direction I'm going should be no more than 4k all in.
