I have my 2006 (CPO) in for service right now.
I get the call, you need a new instrument panel $1300 plus labor. It's covered, also your battery does not have the CCA it should, It's covered too.
Just wanted the oil changed

^ didn't know battery was covered!

OP,

CPO in general is definitely worth it. Extended maintenance on this car is questionable, as most of your money is spent on inspections. No major work besides brakes, might as well do them yourself. It was worth it on an M3, for clutches and valve adjustment.

Big reasons for CPO -
CCV - 3.0's and early V8's
Self Leveling Susp
Transmission Shifting / Harshness
Intermediate Levers - V8's not a serious problem, more of a major inconvenience
Pano Roof
Side Mirror Motors

One of the first 5 could easily be as much as the CPO coverage itself.

Only X5 that I see could see not requiring a CPO would be a 3.0 manual with no air suspension. I guess this is a toss-up in your specific case, as I'd hate to see issues with the Pano if it has one.

to add - if it has a few months of warranty left, drive it around and really nit-pick anything slightly off with the car. make sure the dealership documents anything (stutters, noises, creaks, bangs, etc....) from all the componenets (HVAC, suspension, trans, engine, etc...

also, have the clutch and brakes checked. it would be perfect if these needed to be replaced prior to the end of the new warranty/maintenance.

Goiod luck!

the battery may have coverage left, but it will be prorated, and really after a few years, what is the point? same with tire warranties...

just buy good quality products and don't try to cheap out.

May the force be with you! It wasn't with me. BTW I have only 62K miles and the list of "prone to failure" parts on my X that have failed is lengthy.

I wish you nothing but the best of luck because you are going to need it to keep an X out of the shop.

I'm with Sprocket, though I did pop for WarrantyDirect's deal 4 1/2 years
ago, when my oe warranty expired; WD deal was much less pricey then,
but all I ever had covered was belt pulley dampers and TA bushings...
Certainly not worth the expense, but I suspect I have been just lucky.

When WD kept calling to pitch me on the "re-up", I considered it but took a Pasadena.
'01 3.0 manual trans Sport still running strong. I may have it a lot longer, unless the crap
really hits the fan, or I hit a lotto.

But, I realize a warranty of some kind, for many, is a desirable safety net, and we all have
to decide what works for our own situ.

PLEASE GET THE CPO, you will regret not getting, IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY BELIEVE ME - IS IT $2500???

You can even price your X higher if you plan to resell it, letting the interested buyer know you CPOD the car! Ill pay more for an X with CPO.

Remember the CPO will pay for itself, with probably **one job** that you get done on it, and guess what? we have a extremely high risk of **one jobs** (over 90%), from what I gathered in this forum.

I had to get my carrier door handle replaced the second day I owned it, and my X was pampered crazy, its like new.

Please get the CPO!

Well said . . . and a very realistic statistic! There will come a day when you say "Man I wish I would have bought that CPO." It is usually the same day you get the second 4 figure repair bill.
