to CPO or not to CPO, that is the question
I spoke with previous owner who had few if any problems. Car is clean as far as I can see. Factory warranty expires April 1. I drive around 6000 miles each year. Nothing too stressful. I am concerned with repair and maintenance costs and considering the CPO offered by the dealer. What's a good price to pay for CPO warranty and would you even bother? |

DEFINITELY get CPO, get it with maintenance also. I'm not sure about the cost, but i'm on the last 8 months of my CPO with maintenance and i'm really dreading it running out.
i just had a 4k+ repair done under warranty, also its great to get free oil changes, brake jobs, windshield wipers, etc.

I wouldn't dream of owning one of these things without warranty. These things can be a mechanic's dream and an owner's nighmare. DO NOT purchase used w/o CPO unless you enjoy paying 4-5 figure repair bills on a car that you are still paying a monthly car note on. Mine has just over 60K miles on it and the list of things that has failed is rediculous. Not only would I never own one of these w/o a CPO, I will never own another one period because the number of parts on these things that are "prone to failure" . . . and the parts aren't cheap!

I think it really depends on your capabilities and interest in doing work on maint and repair yourself. From your post it sounds to me like CPO would be a good choice for you. For me it is a nice to have but not a requirement. I can do almost any repair job myself and I have other vehicles to drive if the X5 is down for awhile. So buying a newer one with CPO is not worth it to me and I seriously doubt if the repairs on mine would be nearly as much as the depreciation and CPO costs on a newer model. But everyone has a different answer to that question, so there is no right or wrong answer.

Price out an extended warranty on the private sale and weigh the two as apples to apples.

The question of CPO or not highly depends on the car in question and your driving habits.
With that low mileage, on a manual 3.0, with your low miles expected driving , I personally would NOT go for the CPO or extended warranty, especially since you still have an additional month or so of original warranty left on the car, which allows you to take care of any immediate issues that they car might have.
