Navigation software update?

I am in the middle of purchasing a 2002 X5 (which everyone on the board has been so helpful with) and it has navigation. I have a coulple (more) questions regarding it:

What is the difference between a software update for the nav and a map update?

I have 5,000 miles left on the original warranty, does this warranty cover the software update? Should the dealership do this update for me?

For the MKIII unit, what features does the latest software upate have?

Also, if I decide to have the dealer upgrade me to a MKIV nav set up with Sirius, what do you guys feel is a fair price?

Any help is appreciated!

They should be able to update the software to the latest version free of charge, and the map update means more recent road and landmark/business info, so a definite plus.

If they'd upgrade you to an MkIV with Sirius, I'd try to get them to take $1500 for it.

Pretty sure that split screen is a new feature, not sure what else.

It would be helpful to first know what version of the Operating System you are currently on. See http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-59.html if you don't know how to check this.

In reality, since 2002 there has been very few changes in the OS for the MkIII that are of much significance. The only "major" change came with V26, and that only pertained to the MkIV nav drives (enhanced screen graphics)

Can I download and burn a copy of the latest map in my region (northeast) or do I need to purchase it? If I can download it, where do I go to find that?

This is another thing the dealer SHOULD do for you free of charge.

I linked the wrong thread, my bad:

http://www.xoutpost.com/navigation-sy...cd-update.html

There may be some members here who have downloads available, but I'd suggest you read all the Navigation articles on the front page for some useful links.

I agree that it would be nice if they did, but a dealer likely isn't going to give you a free upgrade on a 2002 model unless you negotiated it into the purchase price.
