How to tell you X has a plastic impeller or metal one?
I've read some threads say the water pump is troublesome for quite some time. If you have a plastic impeller on your water pump, better replace it with a metal one asap. But how to tell?

Chances are you have a Plastic Impeller pump if it has never been changed before.
The newer pumps are made out of a composite material that can be mistaken for plastic, but is actually very durable and efficient. The only real way to find out is by taking a look at it yourself. |

This is a long standing myth. Both have been just as troublesome.

No x5s come with plastic impellers. No water pump will last forever.

the 3.0 can use an aftermarket water pump made by Stewart which has stainless steel impeller - the v8s are stuck with OEM
