Question Steptronic "Switch between Modes"

Is it wise to change the steptronic system from "Regular Mode" to "Sport Mode" while driving?

Or is it best to switch "Modes" at a stoplight when the X5 is stationary?

It's fine to switch while driving. I've done it many times without issues. I usually let up on the gas while I'm doing it, but even that is probably not necessary.

I do it all the time, when entering a highway I switch to sports mode so I have better acceleration and no downshift hesitation. Once I get up to speed I switch back to normal mode.

I drive in S mode literally 99% of the time...I like how it holds the rpms when decelerating, downshifts quicker if I blip the throttle, etc. The only time I bump it back over to normal mode is when I've used the S mode to downshift gears manually instead of hitting the brakes (slowing slighty for traffic, cops behind me), then I just bump it right back to S mode. There is absolutely no issue going from normal to S mode while driving...hell, if you're bored, go back and forth between the two while cruising...nothing will happen.
