Transmission problem - just want to share with all of you

Recently I took my X to BMW service center for replacing water pump, cylinder head gaskets and other hoses. 1 week later, I took my x back and found that the transmission mode kept in S mode when I turned the shift in D mode. I tried to turn the shift to S mode and back to D mode, it still kept in S mode, I also tried to turn to S mode and tried manual mode and then turn it back to D mode, it still kept in the manual mode. The strange thing was when I turn to N or P, then turn it back to D, it would keep in D mode for several seconds and then automatically turn to S mode. I could feel that the X was in S mode when I was driving it. However, if I turned to N and then back to D, then took off the car immediately and kept driving at a certain speed so that the X kept using 2nd gear or higher, it would not shift to S mode and kept in D mode and run very well, but when I slowed down the car or stopped the car so that the X shifted down to 1st gear, it would automatically shift to S mode. I tried to use GT1 to re-program the transmission control unit (EGS), no luck. I put my X back to BMW service center for check, they tried to replace my EGS, and everything went back to normal. So the problem was the EGS. I bought a used EGS from eBay and installed it, then re-code the EGS by using my SSS, now everything goes back to normal.

There are several things I want to share with you:
1. you can buy a used EGS to replace your bad EGS, only need to re-code the used EGS.
2. When you recode the used EGS, you have to choose 'manually input' to recode it, do not choose 'automatically code', since the old used EGS still has old memery from other car.
3. In my case, the used EGS was took off from an E38 740i made in 02/2001. After installing it, but before recode it, the EGS can only go into D mode and S mode, not able to go to manual mode.
4. Before buying a used EGS, you must use the BMW part number to search for a correct car. In my case, the right EGS was only from any E39/E38/E53 equipped with M62 engine (excluding X5 4.6is) and was made between 09/1998 and 09/2001, any EGS equipped in earlier model or later model is not compatable and can not be used in my car (my X is 12/2000 made E53 X5 4.4i).

Wish this helps!

I think if you buy any used control module from the same model and year as your car there is no need to recode that module because the factory coding is the same .
read this somewhere , cant remember where .
