Trunk clicking sound at all times!

I have just bought a 2004 BMW X5. At the time of the inspection, everything was working just fine then the owner removed the "boomerang" which is supposed to be a satellite tracking system.

When I received the car, trunk does not open (not from the key or the button or the button inside the car). It always makes a clicking sound coming from the trunk at specific intervals even with the car off and locked.

Whenever I click the trunk button, a small sound from under the glove compartment comes out but nothing happens at the trunk. And I just found out that the rear wiper does not work aswell.

Any pointers or ideas? Thanks!

I would like to say, welcome to this forum!! it is the best thing you could have done for your X5. As far as your issue, I don't have much experience with that. I suggest you check the two black grounding wires for damage or wear. I will tell you that someone here knows though.

Hey 1stE53, thanks. Where are these two groundings? Also is there a way to force the trunk open manually?

Check the fuses, relays, and do the trunk re-initialization procedure.

Thanks for your feedback

also, the grounding wires are attached to the hinges on the top of the trunk lid.

Thank you X5 Meister, I learned something too :-)

Hey there, been tinkering a bit in the rear fuse box. The sound turned out to be coming from the rear wiper (stopped after i took out its fuse) which doesn't work yet something inside is ticking at fixed intervals.

So now i got 2 probs, the rear wiper and the trunk . Whenever i click the trunk open button, tick comes out from under the glove compartment. any fuses there worth to look at or any docs about it?

Will go later today to the front fuse box under the hood to look for fuses 13 and 14.

Any feedback is much appreciated. thanks alot everyone!

update: did the trunk re-initialization (fuse 13, 14, wait 10 sec then reinsert fuse 14, 13). Nothing changed.

...didn't know the X5 has its front fuse box inside the glove compartment. +1
