it is not just the rim size fit important [calliper clearance, fender rubbing, or bolts offsets and so on...], but also the weight that the rims wil be supporting ...... compact size car 3.000 LB's vs SUV 6.000 LB's or so LB's .... the rims for SUV/Truck are designed to cary more weight [ unless you will be driving with no more than 50MPH on perfect road with not any pot holes] .... just my 2cents.

PS: same story with the tires ratings .....

If they fit on an e36, then the main thing you need to worry about is offset and rim width. Once you have these numbers we can compare them to oem style 87 wheel numbers since they fit flush with a standard e53 fender.

BMWs wheels are all forged aluminum and very strong, I wouldn't hesitate to fit a 3 series wheel on the X5.

On my 03 4.4i I run rims off an 02 M3 18", 8&9 wide. Works fine. To make them fill the arches a bit more I put 20mm spacer on the front and 15mm on the back.

The risk is indeed that they are not quite spec'ed for the weight. A couple of years ago now, an earlier set off a 90's 5-series (8&9s), got bent in an incident crossing a severely crowned interrsection. The fronts came out fine but the rears were destroyed. More than 1/4" run out. (I know coz I have a balancer.) I was not on-board at the time, so not sure how it happened.

I also have a set of 17s (from a Z3 I believe) with winter tires, I ran them for a couple of days this winter but the fit is very tight with the calipers. Would not recommend 17"s as some 17s are likely to need spacers to even fit.

Last note, try picking an M3 wheel vs picking an X5 wheel, the weight difference is quite notable and I suspect putting 3-series wheels on the X5 narrows the margin quite a bit.

just my 2cents-- bought some spacers for a m3 thinking they would fit my X5 and found that the bolt and holes in the spacers are smaller than those for the X. willing to swap or sell to anyone looking for spacers and bolts for a 3 series . brand new never installed pm me will send pic. 20mm and 10mm and full set of lug nuts.

Wheels from an 02 M3 are different than a 98 M3.
