Wierd clicking noise when i shake my steering wheel

Hello guys,

No clue if anyone has experienced this or not. I have a 2004 4.4 about 109,000km on it and I noticed this as of late with my truck. When I am at a stand still and shake the steering wheel from side to side quickly I hear a clicking noise (small click) coming from the front end of the truck more precisely in front of the steering wheel. Spoke to my mechanic he said it maybe the U joint?? or steering rack. God I hope it’s not the rack. Anyone have this issue before ?? Any ideas on what the rack or this U joint would cost

Thanks a bunch

George

With 109k miles it could be a bunch of causes. Worn ball joints, bushings... Do you have excessive play in the steering system?

I'm at 12,000 miles '06 3.0i. I get the same clicking sound and feel when slightly turning the wheel back and forth.

Dealer claims they didn't hear anything.

Past threads also suggest replacing the U-joint.

Sorry I guess I should mention a few things. I recently replaced the following: Ball joints, control arm bushings front dics and pads. Steering system seems to be fine but then again I wouldnt know what it would feel like new seeing is I bought the truck used.

If you replaced ball joints . It shoud be lower steering shaft. Look under the hood, you will see steering shaft with joint, replace it.
