Is it time to get new battery?

I have a 04 X5 4.4i w 54k miles. Bought it from my uncle last year June after he bought a Range Rover Sport. Anyways, after 3 mods to it, it still has the OEM battery and seems to be in tip top shape. The battery indicator is still green. I have a Toyota 4Runner as my work car, so I only use the X5 on weekends. This past winter, I never took it out of the garage for 3 months and the longest I havent started the car was like 8 weeks during that time. so far - No battery drain, no start up problem, and I never lock my car in my garage. Should I get new battery then? Thanks!

I would not get a new battery if I were you.
I would wait to not start and have AAA come save me like faz did (j/k).

I'm assuming by OEM battery you mean the original battery it left the factory with. Otherwise it could be an OEM replacement battery installed by the dealership 6 months ago. Even if it is the original this thing could go on for another couple of years. Save the money now and spend it when you need it. But if you've got the cash just burning a hole in your pocket to be spent on something as cool as a new battery then go for it.

Because he doesn't want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere by surprise. Batteries don't always show signs of their age.

Engine is going to crap out somewhere between the current mileage and 1,000,000 miles. Might as well just replace it now and not delay the inevitable.

A battery costs $150-$200 and only every 3 years.
An engine?
A transmission?

That logic applies to some items, but not ALL items.

Every 3 years?! Just exactly what batteries are you buying?
Exactly, that logic applied to some items, but not ALL items and certainly not batteries.

Preventive Maintenance

My X5 is just over 4 years old now. I have all the service done at my dealership since it is a CPO and I purchased the maintenance package. I just hit 30K miles and had one of the inspections completed in early April. I have the OEM battery. At that time I told my service advisor that I want to replace the battery. I was quoted $475 with labor. I was fine with that. I just wanted it done. My advisor called me and said they would replace the battery, but he wanted me to know that it was really not necessary. His recommendation was to wait at least another two years, unless I started to experience problems. So, I decided to wait.

$475?!

When you do decide to change batt, ~$100 and 20 mins of easy DIY will
get it done.

My only thought on "when" to change batteries out, is after 4 or 5 years,
most batteries, esp in Xs or, in m'cycles, are on borrowed time. Thus, I
would rather change them out in my garage, on my time, not out on the
road. YMMV.

And, a good long, low amp charge on that new battery, does wonders for
the new battery's performance and longevity, imo.
