First off, the 6 cylinder was not powerful enough. It always felt lacking. I have a 3.0 X5 so the same could be said of that but the Jeep felt more anemic due to a variety of factors, namely it's poor quality and rough suspension. The ergonomics were atrocious, from the ridiculously small and hard to adjust air vents to the seats that could not provide a comfortable ride for any ride more than 30 minutes. The plastics were hard and unpleasant to touch. The switchgear felt cheap. The ride was decent if a bit rough, but that was in a straight line and corners were as bad as you would imagine. The example we got was practically brand new but felt more worn out than my 8 year old X5.

I think you would be disappointed with any Jeep you buy to replace your X5.
Commander is probably the worst vehicle in the Jeep lineup.

I had the loan of a SRT8 for week and while its straight-line speed was impressive it handled like a plastic bag full of chopped livers on a bumpy road. Plus it had all the dodgy ergonomics, shitty built quality, etc that seem to come standard with all Jeeps.

It's a toss up between the Commander and the Compass/Patriot twins. Cherokee isn't must better.

Yeah, the interior sucks and it is a rattle bucket, but that 6.1L V8 is a pure thing of beauty.

I rented a commander for 3 weeks, and I really disliked driving it. The steering wheel can not move back and forth. It was the most disconnected car I drove ever. I would have to floor it to pass on the highway. It was a 6 cyclinder though. You will regret getting it because it will just be something that gets from point a to point b. When you get out your car, you will never turn back and look at it. Also whenever you open the trunk on an incline, and have stuff back there it all falls out. In the x5 at least we had the trunk open in 2 pieces, there are many little things we take for granted in the x5 until we drive a jeep. This is all my opinion though, go test on out and see for your self. One last thing, the interior is very plastic. You will miss the x5 alot.

Sorry guys I wasn't more specific... 4-door WRANGLER. I mountain bike and do a lot of outdoor activities and wanted something more utilitarian. I know it wont be as fast as the 4.4 but I have a 135i too so not to worried there. Just want something fun to take the top down and go. If i get the inside dirty , who cares its just plastic.

Just didn't know if someone had both an X and a Wrangler or gone from one to the other and their opinion on owning the Jeep for fun and the daily grind.

For what you've just described the Jeep 4 door Wrangler is an excellent option - just put some decent offroad tires on it so it doesn't look so out of proportion (in stock trim). I say go for it - especially if you still have the 135i for fun.

Look up member jsears. He went from a Dinan S1 to a 4 door jeep, so he is by far the most educated member I know of. Not sure how often he checks the X forum anymore, but if you can find him, maybe shoot a pm?

I have both and have a difficult time driving the Jeep after the X5. It's definately a vehicle to use for off road. If it's not your daily driver then enjoy it for the purpose you employ. They are inexpensive to repair/replace parts but you'll do it often.

Have you thought about a Subaru?
