Air Filter

Just bodged together an induction style filter and thought i'd share the pics. I got both filters of fleabay the smaller was nicked off my scooter when I realised I needed something for the secondary air pump. All in £50.

Does it run any better, or just sounds better?

Not sure yet had it remapped last month so driving different anyway but definately idling smoother and sounds 'kin great.

what yr and trim is this 4.4i or 3.0? Do you have links to fleabay where u bought from or a small DIY write up on how to do this....thanks. Or if you could PM me some more info on where you got and what parts and how hard it was to do etc.

Sorry its a 2003 4.6is
BMW AIR FILTER INDUCTION KIT E36 E38 E39 E46 E60 M M5 on eBay (end time 13-May-10 21:04:50 BST)
this was the main filter I paid £38 its got a 92mm inlet
As for the small filter its a 28mm inlet 90degree bend filter for a scooter, needs a 90 degree bend otherwise it wont fit onto the inlet on the secondary air pump.

this aint the 1 I bought but you get the idea this is the seller I bought mine off though.
I'll get some more pics and try to do a how to but its 1 10mm bolt and disconnect 3 hoses, no tools required they all pull off. There is a small vacuum hose that opens the inlet valve in the airbox which becomes redundant.

yes finaly. so 92mm inlet on the large filter and a small "breather filter" for the inlet valve. Some close up shots of that will be nice. any other plugs or things needed?

Nope just left the vacuum hose dangling could of made a hole in the main filter and pushed it in or fold the end over with a zip tie.
I'll get some more pics up tomorrow as its pissing down here now and i aint got a garage.

Isn't it bad for your engine for sucking in hot air from your engine compartment?

Still got the original cold air feed and the engine bay isn't air tight
Shouldnt imagine the ambient air temp. stationary in traffic in L.A is much cooler

Here goes sorry if it gets confusing but it really is easy and shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes..
Metal clips securing cover on airbox undo em along with the 2 to the maf unit.
press and pull on the hose to the secondary air intake.
By the maf unit there is a small diameter hose (black with a blue stripe) joined to a black woven braid hose disconnect it here its easiest.
Remove the cold air feed
Undo the 10mm bolt to the inner wing and it should all just pull up and out now.
Remove the hose from the secondary air pump.



It works fine without a heat shield as I have left the cold air intake attached but I am going to make 1 as it could do with some support and I've got some time on my hands at the mo.
