maintenance questions

Alright everyone, I've been looking around here for some answers to some maintenance questions I have, but I'm a little confused. It's my first time going through all this stuff, and I really want to understand it and make sure I'm going about it correctly.

here goes:

I've got to flush my coolant and replace it. Other than buying the new coolant and distilled water, what else should I buy? I've seen some posts that say you just pull out the drain plug, drain the resevoir, replace the plug, fill with only distilled water, then drain again, and then refill with the proper 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Is this correct? I've read some posts here that also say stuff about replacing the thermostat and other various parts.

next, my brakes:
The 'check brake linings' message just came on, and I wondered exactly what it meant. I read a post here of one guy that just sanded a small part down and everything was fine, but there were others that replaced their brakes entirely. I will assume I should replace mine, as I'm over 50,000 on the same brakes. Now, this brings up a whole host of issues. Is it worth replacing the oem pads with axiss pads, and must the rotors be replaced at the same time? I just want the same good performance I had before, nothing to complicated. Any suggestions? I think I should also flush the brake lines, is this an easy thing to do? I've read posts on this that say it is pretty simple.

Okay, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

oh, and one more...

I also forgot to ask about tires while I was at it. My tread is getting low, and I am thinking about getting some new tires. Any suggestions? I've got the 3.0i with the sport package (this came with 18 x 8 inch tires all around). I've got the Michelin Energy + tires right now, and I'm looking for something similar, if not the same. I live in Michigan, so snow traction is a definate concern, as is cornering. Any suggestions would also be appreciated.

how many miles on your X5? if around 50K+ miles, then i would recommend changing the thermostat also...

on coolant, its a 50/50 mix. i would personally get the coolant from the dealer instead of an aftermarket one. i don't remember if you need to get a new crush washer for the block drain plug or not... but if you go to the parts department, they will know what you need for the coolant flush. its a common procedure that the provide parts for...

on your check brake lining light, its either the front drivers side or rear passenger side brake pad wear sensor that is triggering the light. this usually means your pads are below 3mm thickness and require a pad replacement. on bmw cars, the rotors are pretty thin when new so they wear also. you need to check the thickness of the rotor with a dial caliper. the minimum rotor thickness is imprinted into the rotor hat. if you are under thickness on the rotor, then you will need to replace all 3 (rotor, pads, and brake sensor).

check the articles for the brake change. there are some pictures that show you how the brake sensor works...

alright, so I'm looking at getting the parts for the brakes online. I was thinking about getting the axiss deluxe pads. I assume I can use these with the new OEM rotors I will get? As for the rotors and other things I might need, I've been looking at Autohaus. Any suggestions as to what brand of rotors I should get? There are various 'OEM' sets, and I just wondered if anyone had good experiences with any particular brand.

I highly recommend Dave at http://www.zeckhausen.com/ as a source for the Axxis Deluxe pads.

As for rotors, I put on a set of Brembo rotors a few weeks ago and so far am very satisfied with them. Brembo is one of the bigger names in the business.

Thanks for the suggestions, I had a great experience with Dave at Zeckhausen, and I will definitely buy from them in the future.
