CPO Transmission Replacement

So I took my X in for the "usual" transmission slamming about nine months ago. I have a CPO warranty through this year and the dealer "reset" things and loaded the latest software update. Things ran well for about seven months and then started to get bad again. After one particularily hard slam (wife's knees hit the dashboard!), the transmission started to "skip" when I take my foot off the gas to slow down, even slightly.

Finally get tired of it after another slam. After lots of research and discussion with my Indie, I go ehad and take it to the dealer to see if anything comes up since I have never gotten any error codes when this happens.

Now you might think being the dealer this would be a really short story. However, after a couple hours, the service manager calls and says they have opened an engineering case with BMW. Less than an hour later, he calls again and says BMW has determined it needs a new transmission and it will go in tomorrow.

So should I be worried? Months of no error codes, then a short visit and a new transmission without even a peep from the dealer about it.

We'll see what tomorrow brings with a new transmission and I'll post an update.

the internet is full of misconceptions. you dont need to set a code to replace the transmission, you just need to reproduce the concern, check the faults, disconnect the transfercase acutator motor check fluid level and condition, trans serial number. reference any applicable service bullitins and if it doesnt fix it, submit a TC case to get authorization to replace the transmission. you get get authorization to replace a trans within 30 mintues of work.

Mine was replaced last week under CPO. Waiting for them to do a couple other things on the car before I pick it up. Am I "concerned"? Heck no, just happy that they found the problem before my CPO expires in 2 months!

Well it ook a few days for them to put the new transmission in but WHAT A DIFFERENCE! No more hard shifts, no more slamming! Shifts are now smooth as silk. Honestly, I think it feels better than new. They replaced the outer CV boots on the front end as well so it was certainly worth the visit.

Like everyone said, I will certainly enjoy my new transmission. For those that want to know the fault code was with teh DSC (5F43). BMW sent a fix which did not work so they replaced the transmission.

I picked mine up yesterday, with fresh trans too. So far so good, though in my case it feels just like the old trans but without the 3-4 upshift hoot, and so far no slow speed bang.

Swath- don't forget you need to drive in D for a couple hundred miles for the full trans adaptation to take place. Running in S or manual mode stops the adaptation process.
