I have (had) lot's of minor issues with the front end largely due to potholes and curbs (compliments of the wifey)... last weekend I replaced the thrust arms and I am considering to swap out the wishbone (control arm) bushings.. the ride seems much better, expecially at speed on the highway.. this is after putting new diamaris on the front as well as new brakes / rotors.. also, considering the swap bars and tie rods to round out a full front suspension rehab..

If one has the means thats the best way to do it... all at once. Lets say (with exception of the thrust rod bushings) the front suspension lasted 80-100k miles... change it all out and you should easily go just as far before things wear again. Same thing for cooling system etc.

Looks like I've developed the shaking while braking at highway speeds too at 46k miles. Need to put this on the list of stuff to do, I'll check out the bushings and see if they are leaking. Should be a pretty straighforward replacement if they are I bet. Seem to remember this same issue or similar on my 01 330ci convertible. I let the dealer change them as I didn't have time or it was dead winter, can't seem to remember exactly what the deal was.

Another installment of OrangeFurious and the old-ass thread.

I am fighting steering wheel vibration on my 4.8is. It's heavy when braking, mild but noticeable cruising at 60+ MPH. I've been down there and can't see any obvious problems or play, and I've had three shops look at the suspension and brakes.

So far I have done:
  • Control arm bushings
  • Ball joints
  • Thrust arm bushings
  • New rims
  • Swap for known good wheels/tires
  • Rebalance wheels
  • Hub centric rings
  • Alignment

Next step is pads, rotors and tearing into the calipers. Anything I'm missing?

Had the same issue - steering wheel was shaking quite a bit at 50-70. After balancing the front wheels (which were new with new tires) and getting the front end aligned, 98% of the wheel vibration disappeared.

Wheel bearings and CV joints checked out. I did a road-force balance (as opposed to wheel-off) and in the process learned the tire shop put one tire on in the wrong rotation. That plus three alignments (grrrr Firestone) have reduced the vibration considerably. It's definite when braking so I'll proceed with rotors and pads, but cruising is much improved.
