This automatic feature some of us have come to enjoy has an interesting history. Twilight Sentinel (Auto lights on the X5) was first available on several Cadillac models in 1964. This feature later became available on selected Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Chevrolet models. A similar feature offered on many General Motors models during the 1950s and 1960s was the Autronic Eye headlight dimming system (which did just that). Ford Motor Company offers a nearly identical headlight delay/shut-off system called AutoLamp. Some of today's BMW's have that feature standard.

All US-Spec BMW's Have auto-headlamps after 2005 (2004 for X5) I had them first in my 2003 M3 but they were bundled with the rain sensor and I was used to them because I had an Explorer before that for a little while and It had Auto Lamp, I hate how on some cars you can't have fog lamps on when it's in Auto (Fords) and most Benz's too. On Our SL we have the 'AUTO' Position but to turn on the front or rear fog lamps it must be moved out of "Auto" and into headlamp mode?

Easy DIY...
When it gets "dusk", (almost everyone knows what that "is"), turn on your headlights. In sunny Daytime, can the DRLs...we M'cycle riders are lost in the sea of ubiquitous, non-attention getting, minivan DRLs.

Ford Autolamp retro modules can be obtained and could be spliced into the wiring. Not sure if it's worth it IMHO.

I have to agree with MD on this one...why is everyone so enamored with auto headlights? Are we so freakin lazy that turning a knob is such a chore? I have it (auto headlights) on mine and never use it. I don't want the ballasts (and self-leveling motors) on my HIDs to have an early death as they flicker on/off every time I'm pulling into/out of my garage, going through overpasses, etc...

I can see MD's point regarding DRL's but "enamored with auto headlights" Naw!! Not everyone is and neither am i. I look at it as a nice feature like climate control, or electric windows. No I wouldn't try to have automatic headlights added after the fact so i don't buy cars without those features. I believe those features and navigation should be standard equiptment on every vehicle.

The EU is draughting a law at the moment for intro next year for DRL's. Italy has already adopted the law ahead of time, most of Germany complies, no doubt the UK will lag behind as usual. On Euro spec cars the lights are set for dusk 'til dawn (with the switch over to its fullest travel, left), the wipers are set for auto operation when it rains which also turns the headlights on. By the way, xenons is spelt as you see it, with an X, not a Z. And switch has a T in it.

For safety headlights should also be used in low sun conditions.
