Shift Lever Issue

I tried some searches and did not see anything like what I am experiencing but if I overlooked it please feel free to point it out to me. Well, my issue is in the recent past I could back out of my garage, come to a stop, and move the shift lever directly from R to D but now it will not do that. I have to hesitate in N, let go of the button and then push the button again to get it to go into D. Same if I am parked some place and can go directly from P to D. It feels as though there is a gate there that must be engaged before it will move from N to D. Has anyone else experienced this issue with the shift lever? The tranny seems to still operate fine. Thanks, Jason
