Anyone using this - GROM iPod Adapter Direct Interface?
Is it easy to navigate through the artists, songs, genres, playlists etc??? Hope there are pictures and/or videos how the GROM works on the E53. |

I bought and self installed the GROM Adapter Direct Interface. The installation instructions are very clear and easy to follow even for an average person like me.
For the benefit of those who are planning on getting / installing the GROM Adapter Direct Interface here are some facts on it so that you know what to and not to expect from it: 1. Your iPod acts as your CD Changer. 2. Direct interface makes it 100x better than a FM-Modulator. CD quality with no hissing sound or distortion - almost perfect! 3. You will be able to choose from the iPod's Playlist but limited to ONLY 5 Playlists on your iPod. Playlists can be accessed through the 2-6 buttons on the MID. 4. You will not be able to read iPod Playlist titles through your MID radio display. You will only be able to identify them through CD-2, CD-3, CD-4, CD-5 and CD-6 since it's a CD-Changer type/process CD-1 is a blank playlist - I don't know why. 5. Songs in the playlists can be accessed one after the other. No song titles can be seen on your MID Radio display. 6. No Artist, Album, Genre selections. Remember that it works only on Playlists. You can plug in an additional unit to its 3.5mm Auxiliary input (maybe a second iPod - I'm planning to do this in conjunction and thorugh my Harman-Kardon Drive and Play or my incoming Alpine EX-10 iPod interface) and junk the whole CD-Changer/iPod thing because I do not want to be confined to just 5 playlists and not access iPod information the normal way. I'm still contemplating but definitely for now I'm satisfied with the sound quality I'm experiencing through the GROM Interface. I'm not that difficult to please. Scale of 1-10..??? I'd give the GROM interface a 7! :-) |

what areas did the GROM get points off on? I don't care to lose my cd changer, I just want to get an inexpensive kit like GROM and get good sound quality from it.

It depends on how you want your music. I prefer accessing my music exactly how you access them on my iPod. For example: I'd like to go through artists, songs, albums, genres, etc, etc.
On the other hand, if you're OK and contented with just streaming the iPod audio directly to your X5 sound system, then the GROM would suffice. Very clean sound coming from the iPod! Bonus points for GROM because you can even directly access your first 5 iPod playlists through the MID controls and steering wheel buttons. I'm sure you'd be happy with it. My comment and rating for the GROM reflects MY preferences on how I want to access my music. Thus, I have combined an Alpine EX-10 (to access the iPod contents like an iPod) and kept the GROM (audio from the Alpine EX-10 3.5mm output - plugged to the 3.5mm Auxiliary input of the GROM). This process avoids the noisy FM transmitter! I'm currently looking at the DICE but not sure yet if I'm willing to give up the 'iPod like' interface I'm currently enjoying right now. I hope this helps. Thanks. |

Gotcha. Same feelings about wanting to continue to use my iPod in the normal iPod fashion. With the GROM iPod kit can you not do that (except for the first 5 playlists accessed on the dash)? I'm also considering getting the GROM Aux kit since it uses the headphone jack and I would expect to be able to use the iPod normally

$$$ I'm a grad student so I have to save every penny I get. I've also read alot about some freezing and radio display issues with some people using DICE. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have it. But right now the $65 GROM Aux kit favors my bank account (or lack there of) a bit more and I've heard very positive things

@01whitex5 - on stage 1 (press CD-1), you can take out the ipod from the glove compartment and use it like a normal iPod wired to the auxillary. I think this is what will work for you. For me I do not want wires sticking out and hanging around while I drive that's why I integrated the Drive and Play (or my incoming Alpine EX-10) to avoid having to hold the iPod while driving.
