I know those rubber bumper-stop things you are referring to!! Those are the ones with the TORX screw in the middle right? Mine are both rusted and hardened already. They might soon crack that's why I avoided tweaking on them.

Try the "rubberized" electrical tape. They last longer and would absorb more pounding due to the cushioning of the rubberized material. Or you can try the foam like material that came from the HAVAIANAS Beach Flip Flop Slippers! (I cut out my wifes and she was wondering where the ___ her flip flops went hahaha hate those flip flops!) - they're more durable than the ordinary foams!

Thanks and Goodluck!

You're welcome gents...compliments of member: X5 Meister.

I've experienced this issue with several X5's and the dealer was clueless on the cause. They did, however, inform me that there were issues with misaligned tailgates on a considerable amount of X5's from factory. Thanks to this forum, i was able to identify the root cause and make adjustments.

note to self:
if removing torx screw from center of rubber stopper assembly, be careful not to allow threaded female sleeve to drop into body cavity below.

Thanks Chilliwilli for the .pdf link!

Quoting from an old post:

Quote:
I believe that adjusting the two upper hatch stoppers outward will cause more outward tension on the lower hatch. This is exactly what you shouldn’t want to do, because that will increase the problem. It’s slack between the lower hatch and the car body that causes rattle. C-S-S pointed at this before: “The main source of the rattle was movement between the upper and lower gates. I removed the covers to the lower gate striker bolts, closed the lower gate, loosened the bolts, then pushed in firmly at the upper corners of the lower gate while I tightened the bolts. Now the lower gate is seated tight, and the upper gate latches tight against it. All rattles are gone!” My only remark is that the lower hatch is not the “main source”, but the only source.
I "shotgunned" the problem with the this method, and installing new gas springs (#6), and the revised style (spring loaded) trunk lid stoppers (#35).

Tok Tok gone gone

I have been bearing with this TOK TOK from back of my X5 for last 6 months now...guys at the garage did not have a clue and I tried every trick in the boot but was left frustated...the car I used to love was irritating me every time I drove it and was even thinking of selling it...until I read your message. And now that TOK TOK is gone!... hopefully for ever...
I think your initial hard work did not go waste at all...tremendous effort and thank you!

You wouldn't believe where the TOK TOK was coming from! After all the frustrations, sleepless nights, disassembly hand wounds and enormous time consumed to find this TOK TOK knocking sound....I finally found it!

It was ALL the 3 REAR LATCHES that are not aligned and therefore created the unsynchronized sporadic untraceable knocking sounds because they were coming from 3 different sources. The latches locked too loosely (probably due to its age and consistent banging through the years) hence the mis-alignment of all my latches.

Solution: I haven't decided on taking down the latches and re-adjusting them so that they lock and fit tightly... So, I just simply TAPED the LATCHES using a rubberized electrical tape. Now the knocking TOK TOK sounds are gone completely after I installed the TAPE. I'm not sure until when the TAPE will hold but I'm seeing some tears already from the center latch after only a few days drive. If and when the metal gets exposed, I will just put another layer of this inexpensive electrical tape!

Lesson learned - Most of the time, the reason for a certain situation is the obvious reason and therefore the solution to this simple situation will ofcourse be the simplest solution! Lets avoid complicating matters! hahaha! Hope this helps! Cheers!
