4.4 coolant leak
I suddenly have to add coolant every few days. All hoses look good and I can't see any leaks but noticed some strange stains around the expansion tank. It's hard to tell becasue of all the rain we are having.
Anyone know where the likely culprit is? I heard radiator side tanks are a possibility. Scariest part of this story is I just got a Service Engine Soon light. Praying it isn't gaskets.

If you're already in the 80-100k range, I always suggest to replace EVERYTHING that is cooling system related....valley pan, thermostat, expansion tank, etc. Once one plastic thing starts going, others are soon to follow. You decide.

time to start purchasing all the components like m5james said. once you replace everything you will have another 90k trouble free maintenance. just make sure you do a good bleed when refilling the system. goodluck!

91,000 miles now. Mechanic never mentioned valley pan but sounds plausible. How likely is the radiator? He said that was a problem on these cars.
Thanks,Greg

I just had to replace my radiator because coolant was leaking from the plastic side tanks. You can check this by just looking with a flashlight for a trail of dried coolant down the sides of the radiator. Mine sprung leaks from both sides at about 66k miles.

EDIT: There is a Little Hose on back of the motor. Don't know how hard it is to reach one, but I've replaced mine. They can cause a leak. |

me too, i was losing coolant. noticed staining on expansion tank. thought it was the cap but eventually noticed steam coming out of a small crack. i tried one of those epoxys but it didnt hold. took 10 mins to replace tank now all is good.
