Any brand species but Michey Diamaris...maybe the most overrated,
barely so-so tire set I've ever bought for any car.

You don't need RFT for E53 unless you want to.

I would recommend the Proxes S/T II's. They are much better than the original S/T's with regard to noise. They were great tires for me, but noise was pretty bad. I would also look a the Bridgestone Dueler HP Sport, Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta SUV or Pirelli Scorpion Asimmetricos. I would personally stay away from the Michelins at all cost as far as the X5 is concerned.

They are Proxes S/T's...

With the Michelin's at $400+/each, I checked out the reviews and ratings at tirerack.com and settled on these:

Continental ExtremeContact DWS

I was hesitant due to my past (poor) experience with Conti's in general, but after 5K miles I am satisfied with these tires. They are wayyyyy more quiet than the Diamaris, wayyyyy more comfortable and should last wayyyyy longer between replacements. On the downside, they don't stick as well in the dry and braking distance is now wayyyyy longer.

Conti vs. Bridgestone: conti's have a higher load rating, so if you tow that might come in handy (another reason I chose them).

I have an 05 4.8is, Bridgestone Dueller Sport I think have the same grip as the diamaris and are a lot less noisy, so far I am really happy with them.

We had contis on the 2000 323i and they were the noisiest tires. As they neared the end of life they got to the point where you didn't want to drive the car it was so loud. We put similar Bridgestones on the 323i and drove them 50,xxx miles before selling the car. They were as quiet from day one till the day we sold it.
