Problem starting, is it the starter?

I own a 2001 X5 4.4 and I am now seeing problems starting her. It seems like the starter is just not taking hold. I turn the key and the started clicks. I turn the key off and try again a few times and eventually it will start. I'm thinking I need to replace the starter. Any help is appreciated.

Starter, battery, battery connections....

Test the battery, then see how much the starter is drawing, before planning to replace it.

When I turn the key, the engine turns over and starts, but the starter still tries to start the engine.

Sounds more like the ignition switch, not an uncommon problem.

This sounds like you are saying that the starter does not disengage after the engine has started. That is quite different than the description of the starter not functioning when you first try.

If the starter is hanging up, then yes, it sounds like the starter.
