Some X5 info/input needed. (3.0i)
Not a stranger to BMW forums here. I'm currently driving a 1999 540iA, and I know how tempermental our Bavarian machines can be. I'm Looking to get into an X5 3.0 early next year, so I've got plenty of time to find an X with the options I'd like. Most important to me are the heated seats and steering wheel, and less so, the Navi system. What are the pros and cons of facelift models vs. prefacelift, and what should I look out for checking out potential cars? Thanks in advance, Al. oh, what is the gas mileage on the 3.0i? Most of my driving is rural and suburban. |

Hi we have members all around the world here and sometimes the time difference makes it difficult to get a response quickly. In regards to your question the face lifted models (04+) got the new X-drive system and visual enhancements along with various other improvements. However pre-facelifted models have a more classic BMW look.
Test drive both vehicles to find out which one you like more. The more common problems you will run into with a I-6 X5 are torn intake pipe, window regulators and CV boots.

I can tell you that if you are a current 540 driver, you will be disappointed with the performance of the 3.0. When I am drive on the free way for a couple of hours I will get 21-24 mpg. From everybody here on the board is sounds like the 4.4 get very similar gas milage, maybe just a little less. So you may want to drive both and then decide. I have an 01 and its nice, but I think you may want to go with a Facelifted model because they just look newer. I am still on the original motor, transmission, drive line, front and rear diff, transfercase. Needless to say I am pleased. But I would have bought a 4.4 4.6 or 4.8 knowing what I know now.
Happy hunting,

Thanks. My main concern with the V8 are the maintenance costs. Mine hasn't nickled and dimed me, but it certainly does cost more to maintain then our 330i which has been relatively problem free (knock wood) I know that on my M62TU motors there are valley pan issues and one the one that scares me the most, the dreaded Timing Chain Guide failure... I know the facelifted X5's have the newer V8, but I've heard they have a cooling pipe that goes through the block that is a nightmare and some serious $$$$ to repair... That's why I'm most likely opting for the I6. |

I purchased a 2002 3.0 and have had a huge number of issues however a friend of mine got the 4.4 with even more problems. Fuel consumption between the 2 are not vastly different. 3.0 has been a dream engine wise (touch wood) and a little cheaper to maintain.
Hope this helps. |

I have a 06 3.0i no problems yet. although one time had a maf issue. Stealerships fault they said they didnt connect it back or something. As the post above stated knowing what i know now I would have got the 4.8. my gas mileage mostly stop and go traffic says 17.1 on the obc. appearance wise the headlights are staring to either get scratched or have a buildup. The acceleration seems sluggish. I put my foot down and wait..
