newbee- engine emissions light came on? how bad could it be??
new to the forum. i bought my 2001 4.4lt x5 lpg, 5 days ago, after having the usual problems with my 1998 range rover. on the 2nd day of owning it the engine light came on. in the owner manual it says "deterioration of exhaust emission control values" it seems to run fine, and its going on the diagnostics tomorrow. but could someone tell me what the worst case scenario would be with this please. thanks p.s. i've got to say i absolutley love the car! |

Worst case is significant repairs to the emissions control system. Best case is a loose fuel filler cap.

Impossible to say without more information about the issue.
Tightening the fuel filler cap is free. What is the story on the lpg, was it a properly done conversion? The dealer may or may not know anything about it, and so may point the finger at it.

yes i'll check the filler cap. i'm quite shocked about the filler cap after doing a search on it.
the lpg was fitted by an approved installer, and was fitted 2yrs ago.i've booked it in for an lpg system service in 9 days, and they should tweek it so its running perfectly. it does seem to run fine on both lpg & petrol. but when i went to view the car the lpg tank was empty, which is not supposed to be done. |

will the engine light go out automatically, when sorted. or will it have to be reset?

Depends on the issue. The emissions warning is a grab bag of any type of issue that causes pollutants to increase, from evaporative emissions (fuel cap, pressure pump, etc) to catalyst problems (sensors, air supply) to combustion problems.
Using the fuel filller cap as an example, if it was loose then tightening it will cause the light to go out by itself within a day or so. Other problems will require a reset. I think the lpg system is a potential cause of your problem.
