'01 4.4 code: 140 Activation map cooling
Hi there,
Just plugged a GT1 into my '01 X5 with 42k on it and noticed the following code from the DME: 140 Activation map cooling Is it normal for the thermostat to go bad? Is this something that needs to be replaced right away, or can I let it wait a few weeks? Engine seems to run fine, but what do I know ![]() Thanks, Chris |

It isn't uncommon across the lot of BMWs. Usually the the thermostat either still works by coolant temp activation, or sticks open. But the heated wax pool in it that the DME heats to control it isn't working hence the activation code.
It should be fine for a couple weeks as long as it doesn't stick closed. Just keep an eye on the temp gauge to make sure it doesn't jump to hot and it will be fine till you change it.

Great, thanks so much for responding Weasel
I'll get it done soon. I'm surprised it didn't trip the SES light?I also received another code, P0134 (Oxygen 02 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank I Sensor 1)), but I reset it and it hasn't come back...yet. I'm hoping to avoid that repair I know O2 sensors are not cheap.Chris |
