can you recommend a good alignment shop in Jersey, that does it by the book, i.e. using weights in the seats/trunk(?) to weigh down the car?

I honestly never heard of alignment with weights.

And I thought I knew everything !

So I cannot help you with that request. Sorry.

FWIW, I just had an alignment done at IMG, and am DELIGHTED with the results... I doubt the put any weights on the seat or in the trunk though.

Just found this from another X5 forum:

"as per bmw repair manual 150lbs each front seat, 150lbs center of the back seat, and 46 lbs cargo compartment with a full tank of fuel"

That's a lot of weight, 496lbs.

Well, If you mean by central Jersey like say Flemington. I have a guy who has a shop and they only work on German and Swedish cars. Zygmunt worked in a BMW factory when he was a young man in Germany.

It's an old timey place. NO APPOINTMENTS, you show up you tell what's wrong they take the keys and your phone number.... That's it. I know weird, right. took me awhile to get used to it.

He calls you within 24 hours with an estimate I think he's great.

I'm not sure whereabouts in NJ my brother will be relocating to from Cali, but I did some work on his X5 cv boots over Thanksgiving, and now the car is not stable at speed.
Hopefully it just needs a good alignment.

We've started using Europcar in Morristown, NJ, for service on our E46 and E53. It is similar to what Ghost-Flame explained at his shop. Stop there, they diagnose quickly and then you leave the car with them. We trust them and plenty of other people do too as we usually see at least 5 other BMW's of the same era in their lot.
