miles to kilometers

Hi Help please.

I have a 2006 X5 300i.
I live in Canada where we go by kilometers & Celcius. I bought my BMW in California and I have a problem
On page 73 of the manual it deals with Odometer, trip odometer and outside temperature display. these are the 3 meters in a cluster with the speedometer etc. Now my odometer reads in miles, my trip odometer reads in miles and my temp display reads in celcius.
All other displays on the computer are in kilometers except the above 2.
Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can convert these "miles" to
"Kilometers". I assumed that when I changed the temp from Farenheit to celcius as per page 73/74 the miles would also change but they dont.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

I think the american miles differ from british miles, but just to give you an idea 1british mile= 1.61km. I think there is a way to change settings to kilometers. But sadly I do not remember how. Good luck.

The km/mi conversion has to be done at the dealership via programming.

UK and US Miles are the same. The difference is the gallon. Our gallon is weirdly smaller than the UK gallon.

We should all split the difference and convert to litres.

Brendan.

Try to get to Brian Jessel in Vancouver. Thye do a wonderful job and charged only the shop rate when we had our done. There are also other function you can have done. These are listed on the home page here in the documentation.

Did u have any hassles at the border getting it in? Do the extra BMW Canada charges still apply?

Cory

Hi Cory, thanks for reply. I just found out that the Dealer in Seattle will do the work next time I am down there. I went to the BMW dealer in Richmond B.C. re my 80000 km warranty and they verified that the warranty cover would still be in effect in Canada. No problems at all at the border. US side were excellent, processed my documents in under 2 mins. Canadian side, easy there also, just paid GST, plus $100, plus small fee to cover fed inspection.
There were 2 other people ahead of me importing cars and it was hassle free
for all 3 of us.There was no import duty as the vehicle was built in USA.

it is funny - today I started my car, drove for a few minutes, looked down at my cluster and almost had a heart attack - my mileage instead of 120K miles read 200K miles!!!! WTF??!!! then I noticed, it is in km instead of miles. My car is a US built to US specs for US market, I have driven it in Latin America for couple of years and now I am driving it in Moscow, Russia. I have no problems keeping the car at miles, as originally built and even though the car has been to the service people, the mileage has been in miles after I got the car back from the service... I was on a business trip for almost a month, and drove the car first time since end of May - back in May, I can swear, it was in miles...

Is the car brain going south? the conversion between the mile reading and the km reading seems to be correct - I did not "gain" nor "lost" any numbers in travelled distance...

Anybody has an idea, how can this reading change from mi to km without dealer messing with it?
