Adding engine oil

Just checked my oil with the dipstick, and is below the minimum. The nearest dealer is around me is about 2 hours of driving distance. Instead of adding the BMW engine oil, can I just put in any 5w-30 to the engine?

Yes...any 5W-30 should do, but preferably full synthetic. Why drive all that distance to the dealer for a couple quarts of oil? Just buy a good quality synthetic, like Mobil 1 or similar and call it the day.

Talking

Preferably Castrol since Stealer oil is Castrol. It will just be more compatible in its composition. However, any synthetic will work just fine as stated above.

You could mail order some and then you'd have extra on hand.

Top it off with Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic. I have entirely switched from using the BMW castrol to Mobil 1.

5W-30 synthetic will do, either Castrol or Mobil One, I would not use anything else in my X5.

I have been considering using TOTAL/elf 5w-30 motor oil. It comes highly recommended.

Where the hell do you find THAT?

I'm going to use Mobil 1 0w40 on my next change.
