Is this a joke??? bootdoor opens when light is switched off

Ok, this is the story...
Came back from work late Thursday evening. Parked up, switched off engine, bootdoor opened...Hmm?
left the car thinking I accidentally pressed the boot release button on the key.

Friday morning pulled into garage, switched lights off and wheeheey boot opens...close boot and restart engine... switch off engine, boot opens...

Candid camera??
Anyone experienced this before....the stealer told quoted me $500 to fix it...

Possibly. Moisture gets in there through that rubber strip that's on the outside which you push to open it. Ours would randomly open.

there have been known cases of harness chafing around the "boot area" also. Any kind of shaking or movement in that case will cause the trunk to open. There have been TSB's out for that.

This is a common problem on the X5's. The trunk latch needs to be replaced. The long trim piece just below the BMW emblem will also need to be replaced when changing the latch. This requires painting before installation. I had mine replaced twice under warranty. If you ignore this problem, it will drain your battery and then you will have a bigger headache!
