Airbag deploys, what happens to the airbag cover.?

Let me explain.

You know how when you first start driving they tell you your hands should be at 10 & 2 o'clock. Well, obvioulsy this is not the case, some people drive with one hand, at 12 o'clock, some people, like me, drive with both hands, but a 7 & 4 o'clock. Some others, like my wife, uses both hands, but places both at about 6 o'clock.

So the question is... if you have an accident, and the airbag deploys, does the airbag cover in the steering wheel, open toward the top, bottom, side..? (it probably depends on the steering wheel, but just in general. but what is your case, maybe there is a pattern?), im curious as to how bad it would hurt, if you have your hands at 6 o'clock and the cover slaps your fingers..! or if it goes up, and you have a hand at 12 o'clock, would it bust out your forearm..?

We call these "airbag burns". You will get a friction burn on the forearm (ask me how I know!!), and occasionally on the nose. Usually this is nothing more than a slight redness; sometime a deeper abrasion. None of which is nearly as bad as the injuries sustained without the air airbag.

An ex-sister in law had an accident in an older VW Jetta. The steering wheel flap slapped her hard across the hand. She had a reverse "VW" insignia on her hand for a week or so.

is there actually a flap?
i thought the airbag exploded
thru some sort of slit (which
ins't visible) in the steering
wheel.

The "slit" is essentially a weak spot in the plastic that allows the airbag to come out. It does create a flap in the plastic to be a big enough opening. The shape is different on different cars.

there is a slit on horizontally on the airbag cover. but it does get blown off the steering wheel so it may hit the driver from the force of the bag being inflated.

there are vents on the side of the bag where the hot gases escape and those can burn you and statdoc would know of these burns.... i know of a few people who claimed no burns with their hands at 9 and 3 o'clock (the proper hand positions, driver's ed is wrong).. perhaps their hands were knocked free by the bag, who knows.. so much happens in that 1/1000th of a sec...

A friend of mine just got in an airbag deploying accident. He didn't complain of any pain related to the airbag. Rather, he has more pain from the seatbelt, to wit, sore ribs.

9 and 3 is where your hands should be and it feels better when you're holding an ///M Sport steering wheel.

when my 330xi airbag deployed the bag came from the bottom of the flap, but the flap still remained in place.

This is what the part of the airbag housing looked like after deployment.

The airbag opens up if the steeringwheel is in the up position. If you look really close at the airbag...you can see the perferrated edged near the top of the airbag cover. My steering wheel is forced about 90% from center and I had burns on my wrist and right thigh. The burns were very bad..but healed up in less than a month.
