*EXPERT OWNERS* Need advice on 2006 4.8is purchase-DONT SKIP:)
So, I am in the market for a 4.8is. I dont like the new body and not willing to go older than 06. So I'm stuck on that year.
It seems that finding a CPO model @ a decent price is not so easy. Not even sure a CPO is all that much more great than non- in my situation. That leads me to my questions: If I buy a good, clean, inspected unit with about 50k or less, what are the chances I'm gonna have a major breakdown? I am quite an acomplished troubleshooter/mechanic although have never wrenched a bmw. I cant imagine I would need the dealer for anything other than coding or something like that, but this will be my daily driver and will be traveling to some remote places rather frequently. I figured I could get the Bavarian technic software/hardware and lick most the common problems myself. I have a huge shop and all the tools I'm gonna need. Does the 4.8is have the same cooling troubles as the 4.4? Are any of the drivetrain parts beefed up to handle the extra power? Or are all the axle sizes, spline counts, i/o shafts, tourque converter, tranny, etc. just carryovers from the 4.4? Can some of you experienced guys tell me what I am missing here? There is some-things that I dont realize not having owned a BMW b4? PLEASE HELP, and feel free to flame ![]() I am really impressed with the boards here and appreciate the site, so thank you in advance. |
