The truth will only come from owners with v8 engine spec bmw x5s, so lets hear the truth please
Sounds like mis-information to me. The M62 engine from 1999+ is a very reliable and bulletproof motor. Valley pan gasket can fail, but that is a relatively simple replacement and has no impact on the motor itself. I have two myself - the Alpina built 4.6L variant in the X5 4.6is is a monster and makes the X5 very fun to drive. I get in the 13-14 range in city only driving, and highway is around 19. Overall in about 50/50 mix over 14K miles the long term mpg is showing 15.

The M62 in my 740i does a lot better. It gets 27-28 on the highway and upper teens around town. My long term average mpg is showing 24 on that car. Gearing is way different - 75mph is maybe 2200rpm vs. 2900 in the 4.6is. Car platform is more efficient too vs. AWD tall SUV. But either way these V8's are great motors and fairly fuel efficient for a V8.
