My 2006 X-5 3.0 makes a whining noise when turning. it doesn't seem to do it when driving.

I just picked up an 04 3.0 a couple weeks ago that does the same thing. I've been looking around but haven't found any answers yet either. Any help would be appreciated...thanks, b

the power steering pump makes the sound
the noise will come and go
probably no reason for concern

Check your power steering fluid level. Mine was low which caused whining or groaning when steering.
There are a bunch of posts about power steering fluid.

Sit in the garage and test it by turning the wheel. Rev the engine, and if it changes, you've found your culprit. It may be too late, but changing the power steering fluid only takes like one quart of ATF to swap out.

on the topic of changing power steering fluid. Is it worth it if you don't change the filter?
