Does not communicate with VTG

Hello everyone,

Was just done reprogramming the GM3. Now my rear suspension is almost up, trunk is working fine, central locking system. Suspension error message still shows up every now and then...

While I was at the mechanic while checking why the ABS/4x4 inactive is showing in the dashboard, he mentioned that I got few bushings and balljoints to be replaced. He also said that one module cannot talk to the VTG.

Asking about VTG, he said that it's related to oil pressure in the differential since the car is over 160k. What do you guys think? and any idea about this VTG thing? first time i hear about it.

Thanks everyone!

You know that VTG is the transfer case, and not the differential?

If the fluid is out of spec in the transfer case on an x-drive version, it throws a code. I would expect that you would see a 'fluid out of spec' code, and not a ABS/4x4 warning, but you would have to check the codes for that. The fluid requires replacing when it goes out of spec, and the code must be reset. A fluid that is out of spec would cause a pressure variation.

So, you may have that condition, and it is causing the dash light, or, based on your mechanic's comments, there may be a communication fault with the transfer case and that may be causing the light.

on 2004-2006 x5 vehicles, especailly 3.0i varients, a faulty servo actuator motor for the transfer case causes the 4x4 and dsc lamps to illuminate. Additionally, a terminal 15 fault in the instrument cluster can cause the lamp to illuminate, this situation occurs when the ignition switch fails. the terminal 15 fault occurs when a kl50 signal is recognized, but the terminal 15 signal is missing.

if your mechanic has a GT1 or displus, communication with the VTG should be present verify that his equipment is up to par prior to parts replacement.

Hey, thank you all. Mine is a 2004 4.4i. I don't see any fluid out of spec messages, just 4x4 dsc inactive. If it's really the actuator, any chance you guys know the part number to look up on realoem and see if its on ebay? (bought my GM3 brand new in the antistatic wrapping off of ebay for 140$)

Off to another round at the mechanic i guess! Should this be something critical? I'm in Montreal and we will be getting snow next month.

thanks for the info!
