2000 to 2005 upgrade,is it worth it?
I have an internal fight over if I should upgrade with a 5 years younger X. Options are good on a new one, like panoroof, heated back seats etc. I have my 2000 with rebuilt tranny and some other stuff, but needs TLC and the timing chain guides(at least),some minor surface rust under the hatch lip and door trim... It needs rear suspension update, have all the parts, which I could use on the newer one as well. Right now I am driving a Mazda CX7 and zoom zoom gives me no towing hitch and pessimal gas mileage of 18l/100kms city and 13l/100 highway. Not to mention the reduced interior room and ride quality. So I don't know if I should reanimate my 2000 and get stuff fixed, like some leaks, rust,NEW TIRES,although I still like my Oxford green better that the Silver of the 2005 candidate, and the simple mechanical stuff in the power train..... Mazda would get an almost even trade in value as the asking price.

2005 has around 92,000 miles or 157,000 kms
2000 has 144,000 or 245,000kms

The 2005 has the ZF 6-speed auto, which is supposed to be more reliable, than earlier GM transmissions; The panoramic sunroof can give untold amounts of grief, and costs a fortune to fix - I'm trying to keep my pano roof holding on, but I'm almost scared to use it...

Both X5s show number of miles that suspension and other normal wear items, are not many miles from when they begin to cause problems. The exception is if some of those items have all ready been done. Can't tell if you plan to end up with both X5s. If you are going to end up with one, I would go with the 2005 as there are improvements and features that you will enjoy or benefit. Also, at near 200,000 the potential fail of costly parts or repair is much higher

I would keep just one X.
I think of going the inexpensive way and replace the timing chain guides without investing much in the tool set etc.Just replacing the broken parts and gaskets, unless there is a major mess inside.Which I doubt, because prior the guides failure everything ran noiseless, just some idle ups and downs, which are as I understand were provoked by looser chain and failing DME timing calculations/adaptations. I went through the same thing a while back and I decided to fix the 2000 one. Now what bothers me is the hood grille. I wish I had the face lift model now. On my 2000 I replaced almost everything, now I am doing the sunroof and the airbag module. Everything would include: abs module, calipers, fuel filter, window regulators, door latch, all the rubber o rings and gaskets, chains, vanos when I did the chain guides, the trasmission, engine mounts, transfer case, drive shaft, wheel bearings all corners, all bushing, belts, pulleys, tensioners, rear drive shaft... And probably other stuff that I don't remember right now. So, if you haven't done all of the above most likely you will have to do it eventually. All this started around 200k km.
I don't know if this helps to take a decision but think about it. The 2005 n62 doesn't have the chain guides issue but it seems that it has even bigger issue with the levelers and white smoke although having less miles you might save on the suspenssion, bearings.... I have one of each at this point and that's probably what causes the issue with the hood grill on the 2000 model

Tranny was rebuilt 50,000kms ago due to shuddering Torque Converter(now needs a harness with a temp sensor $200 bucks)
Engine was swapped because of failed guides(how ironic,I am back to the same problem). If I knew the problem and a solution back then,I wouldn't ever let this swap happen. Front end control arms, tie rods, struts, links, all new front brakes(rotors,3 calipers due to one failing a month after warranty ran off, pads),fuel filter,VP gasket along the pipes,WP,Oil separator,VC gaskets, gaskets, gaskets, new Arnotts in the back...new hoses and secondary thermostat,x-rings,o–rings,2 door carriers and one window regulator. Some new brake lines + a load of suspension components are in the garage,waiting.....also needs the steering column universal joint, because I am sick of that play and clicks over some bumps. It needs to get all that stuff and get new tires and an alignment. And after all that I still think that a 2000 one is to stay. I really like it. Now I just need to have some spare time so I can work on it.You may ask why. I am sure that a prefacelifted one is simpler.More mechanical stuff in the drive train.I really like its 5 speed box, especially in a manual mode. I may get it restored by a paint store, like a half year ago I had it quoted and it's around $3500 + taxes or a private guy for a half price. Or myself after I try repainting the pealing bumper ![]() Paint can Quote:
