BLOWER MOTOR ON WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF AND KEY OUT.

I'm looking for some help AGAIN..I parked my 2001 x5 4.4, came back 2 hours later and the blower fan was stll running.
I located the 50 amp fuze in the glove box and unplugged it to stop the fan.
Whats up with that? Is there a sensor or some type of relay that is causing the problem??

I tried looking through all the Forums but I'm new to this site..Is there a easy way to look up what I'm looking for or do I have to keep looking at everything posted?

Try changing the hedgehog mounted on the end of the blower on the drivers side, this is a common fault on most Bimmer's and when faulty causes the fan to run on and flatten the battery.

Forgot i am from England so hedgehog maybe on the other side on yours, not sure.

The component is known as the Final Stage Resistor, sometimes by the letters FSR. It looks like a hedgehog.

You can also do a search on the phrase final stage resistor or FSR, and you will find many posts. It is a common failure.

The FSR is on the right side of the vehicle, as pfs600 notes, so it is fairly easy to get to on a LHD vehicle.

If this thing is a resister, is there a way to ohm it out to see for sure if is GOOD OR BAD?

If the fan is always on, or always off, or doesn't respond correctly to the fan speed selector switch, just replace it. It is a common failure point. I share your interest in diagnosing things properly before just replacing them, but this one is so common that it isn't worth it. It isn't expensive, and you can replace it yourself.

Just replace the FSR, its a bit fiddly but i did mine last week and it takes about an hour from start to finish, As has been said its a VERY common fault. You will see when you replace it that the original one has far less spines on the heat sink compared with the new one you put in, this causes them to overheat. I paid £40 for mine so in your money about $80

yes replaced mine. same exact symptoms. think i paid $65 for the resistor. it literally just plugs in. sure all the diy will make it clear.

I replaced mine about two months ago and now my fan stays permanently on while vehicle is on, but shuts off once I power off. Is this normal?

Easy enough job - more so on LHD cars.

Agree re not needing to check it 99.9% certain it's FSR.

Small hands useful so call on a younter relative if you struggle.
