Hmm. i'm not sure what you mean about the box at the end of the rear cargo cover. Pictures would probably help..
If not, you can buy a new cargo cover from the dealer... WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Good point, but alas I didn't take any of that part. All I can say is that the busted part is where the cargo cover sits/anchors against the seatback. I think it was the one on the passenger side.

Amacman, if it is indeed that part, then it is a larger problem than the cargo cover. I would hope not
JAXX5, post up pictures of your New X5, what kind of low mileage are we talking about?

Got It Today
some pix of the new (to me) arrival. Bought from original owner. Replaced it with a brand spankng new one. The first thing to repair or replace is the rear cargo cover. Notice on the last pix how one side og the cover is missing the piece on the end? What is going on there? Any help much appreciated...

that looks like it belongs to the cargo cover that pulls back from the backseat to the rear. it should clip into the louvers somehow and then should slibe in a channel.

I think the box you are referring to is the cartridge that holds the ends (and aligns the rollers) of each pleat in the early model acordian style cargo cover. It looks from the photos that you have the one on the right end, but not the left. The two boxes, or cartridges, are part of the cargo cover itself. Once the cargo cover is unclipped, ie when you are loading large items, those cartridges can fall off. If you have both ends, they can be reinstalled on the rollers. I had to do that a few times. If they have been disassembled, probably by someone trying to get the rollers back in, then you just need to ensure that you have all the parts. If not, buy a new cargo cover.
Edit: Looks like you can buy just the ends. They are called supports, and are different for left and right, available in three colours. Item 14 on the drawing in this link: RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.4i NETTED BLIND F SIGHT PROTECTION
