replaced controled light module = self leveling suspension inactive
Like many others i had problems with my side light and rear light's,so after new sockets...checking the units they still didn't work so i got at ebay the whole new LED kit,they look great but the rear light (now LED) look like they were trembling and the side light/rear light fault warning still came on but every thing work on exception to the rear,they work but are trembling.I had it checked and the right side was only getting 2 volts,so we decided to get a light control module,used but same identical part number,i did this because it seamed cheaper that taking it to the dealer and look at it and the used module we found was at a god price. Got it installed and the rear light/side light fault warnings are gone but the Self leveling suspension inactive warning came on but car fells the same and suspension acts the same,so i replace old to double check and the new problem goes away and old one comes back...Do i need to have the dealer reset the control light module or are both no good? Thanks |

a novice to bmw electronics would assume that installing a used lamp control unit would be ok, but an expert would know that, the lamp module is also a check control module, if the control unit is not coded correctly, it looks for options that the donor vehicle had on start up, and to prioritize the messages. coding is based on ZCS coding, also known as the central coding key. This key unique to vehicles of the same option coding and model year production, will identify, if the vehicle is Left hand drive, or RHD, if it has Self Leveling, if it has auto or manual climate control, or if its a Diesel or Gas engine, etc.
to remedy your issue, you must recode the control unit. Caution: if the used LCM is an older coding index, (number printed on the control module) example Coding Index 19, and the one you had originally was a Index of 24, the used control unit may not know how to handle options not orginally available, such as Automatic Lamps, rear fog lamps, etc. Another piece of information, would be to check the instrument cluster, if there is a red dot illuminated next to the trip odometer. this dot indicates that the milage in the vehicle has been tampered with, and would hurt resale value and may tarnish the vehicles history if ever noted. My recommendation would be to check why the LCM failed,(most likely water damage from a clogged front right sunroof drain tube), and to repair the clog. Replace/repair the wiring and connectors with BMW original NEW Spare Parts, and to recode the control unit so the milage matches the instrument cluster. |

I know this thread is rather old, but hoping killcrap will catch this. What/where on the LCM is the coding index? I have no issue performing the programming, but i'm confused where to find this revision number.
