bought MDX for son because of reliability

My son is going away to college 500 miles from home. I have a 94 540i, 2000 540it, and a 2005 X5. None of these cars were in my opinion reliable enough to make 500 mile trips through the desert. I bought a 2005 MDX with 100k miles and my expectation is that it is safe and reliable. I am sure there will be some items that need attention, but hopefully none that will not allow the car to travel. I am a heavy diy'er and can afford to drive these awesome cars since I do the labor and get parts at discount. My son has no interest nor attention to work on cars. I guess that particular apple fell off the tree and rolled down the hill.

You will sleep better (driving and owning) in a Volvo from the sound of it. I'm on my 2nd BMW and my experience is the exact oposite and I get the benefits of a dynamic driving experience.

For the most part, I have come to the conclusion that for whatever trade off there might be in getting the benefits of driving a BMW for some, they really want to have a vehicle that requires no maintenance and never breaks. For most true enthusiasts they quickly tire of a boring vehicle and are willing to spend more on the price ownership associated with an amazing vehicle like a BMW.

Starting off saying that A)the x5 is a car and, B) when they're right they drive well, indicates a limited understanding and appreciation, of what a BMW X5 really is.

It's more fun to come on the forum and dump on the entire brand and say they are all pieces of crap.

I couldn't disagree more.

I have never quite understood the desire to create "drama" by announcing departure from a board. I get the impression some want the rest of the board to beg them to stay. If you want to leave for whatever reason, you leave.

Agreed. You cant have your cake and eat it too. There is a trade off. And that just doesnt fit for the OP.

Too bad.

Hey, i'll admit, these cars are a bit of work. But to some of us, its pure joy..

i realized after getting a new tranny, intermediate levers, and a couple other smaller items that although it can be a PITA--the pure driving pleasure is worth every cent. There's nothing like the wow factor i get on an on-ramp to the highway, or the looks i get from other car enthusiasts, all giving me thumbsup..I love my BMW, and think i will try to stay in the "bmw family" for most of my life

i just dont know if i could get that in a volvo-- i will admit, they are great cars though, just not my cup of tea

Interesting that so many jumping on the BMW bashing band-wagon have so few posts here.
So what you're saying is that if I boost my post count I won't have as many problems with my X5? Suppose i better get postin'.
