You sir, are correct. The US vehicles use a 1:1 reflective ratio mirror on the driver's side...and a convex mirror on the passenger side. In fact, the only way we can get a convex or aspherical (wide angle) mirror for the driver's side is order them from the Euro side of the parts database...or shop for them online with aftermarket vendors, or overseas sellers.

As some have mentioned...the aspherical/heated side mirror is less expensive and easier to find...the aspherical/heated/auto-dim side mirror is way more expensive and a bit harder to find.

Below is an example...it's the old driver's side 1:1 mirror on my e38 which I replaced with an aspherical mirror due to the "rust" around the edges (actually mirror delamination):

Below is my e38's aspherical replacement mirror on driver's side...it freaks out unsuspecting drivers at first because they are used to the 1:1 visual ratio...you can actually take a 2nd look in the USA mirror when stopped at the light to watch that fine young thing walk down the sidewalk...the aspherical mirror is too distorted & distant to actually get a good lock For driving visibility...score one for the aspherical mirror. For gawking at pretty young things walking down the side walk...score one for the 1:1 USA driver's side mirror.

(below is the orig passenger side convex mirror)

Just an FYI for those searching for this info that may come across this thread in the future.

Thank you Qsilver7. I got a pair of replacement mirrors too (non dip but blue tinted) but had a problem installing. Pictured below is new mirror on top, stock on bottom. I'm thinking the stock mirror is still connected to the mount plate and that needs to be pried off and put on the new one to then just snap it in? Can clearly see the "cup" on the stock and where it plugs in on the housing. Thought I'd ask before breaking it I mean, trying to swap over.
