Rear hatch lightbulb removal?

I want to permanently remove the 2 interior rear hatch courtesy light bulbs. There's quite a bit of resistance when trying to remove the clear plastic lens, which I don't want to break. Do they just pop off or do you have to remove the interior panel to get to the bulbs? All help appreciated (2006 X5).

They should come out easy if you pull on one of the short sides. I am thinking about replacing the bulbs with LEDs so that they can stay on for hours without harming the battery. That might solve also your problem.

To remove the lens, you slide it to the side and then it will pop out without resistance.

The clear plastic lens and light bulb socket are one piece.

I have one lens that is tapped in from the previous owner. I have not removed the tape, I just assumed that it is broke. Anyone know the part number for this lens?

Thanks.
