2001 X5 4.4l stalling

Hello, i'm new to the forum and could use some adive. I have an 01 X5 4.4 with 137,000 miles. Recently the car has been randomly stalling and giving me ses light which reads of21(camshaft vanos control cyl. 1-4). It has died once on me while driving and a few times right after i start it. I put the car back into park, turn key to off, restart the car and it usually won't happpen again until my next drive. The engine is also sounding a little like a diesel. Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

I have read that these symptoms can be caused by timing chain rail failure. I would do some reading on that as the diesel sound and the ses code fit. It's not highly common but it happens. You may not want to start it until you can make sure that it's not that issue as it could damage the engine. One of the articles I read on the subject suggested looking in the oil filter for attic bits as this is a dead giveaway. Probably a decent idea since its easy to check. Hope that helps out

Cam sensors are definitely a possibility, I didnt mean to throw out the worst case scenario but Id check the oil filter to be sure. Let us know how it goes.

Ok so i cleared ses light and changed both cam sensors but the car stalled on me again after fueling up and the gas station. Turned the car on after pumping, drove two feet and it cut out again. This time no ses light only the bat. and oil light. Oil level is fine so is bat. and oil filter. No idea what to do next, already looked for vaccuum leaks. Any ideas guys? Thanks

You need a diagnostic with the gt1. This will give u vital information on what is going on. I had a problem with my gas cap leaking. So far no stalling since then.

Did your gas cap leak shoot a code or no? Where could you get the gt1 cheap? Seems kinda pricey. Thanks
