****4.8iS: 4.44 Front and Rear Diffs, Installed****
The increase in acceleration is intoxicating, and the drivability is as OEM factory. Overall, a must upgrade to anyone seeking a lil' more "humph" from an already fully modded X5. |

Cool, do you do some competitive racing?
Me, I don't want to lose anymore MPGs with that upgrade. Or does it not affect your overall drive ratio?

Going from the stock 3.91's to the 4.44's should make for a decent change in pickup feel, but the speedometer and odometer will be left inaccurate and you will lose some top speed and MPG on the highway etc. But it's gotta make it damn fun to drive!

As far as daily driving, the X5 is great. I have all Dinan goodies installed (stage 3: tranny and engine sw; x-pipe; throttle body; intake; 4.44 frt/rr diffs) and I still avg 17mpg city/hwy.

![]() A lot of fun for a DD, and really does not cause any major top end difference - however I'm finding myself stepping on the skinny right pedal a lot harder, lol. I'm an adrenaline junkie at heart

A few questions if the info isn't classified:
What is involved in creating the gearsets? - Other BMW parts? - One-off's? How did he determine backlash? - What spec was used? - Shims needed? Transmission temps are kosher?

As an FYI, the total cost of the diff project was $5k.
$4k for front and rear diffs (including, a ltd static lock); and $1k for install. |

That's actually quite a good price!! I paid about 3k (parts only) for just the rear of my 7, went from a 2.82 one-legger to a 3.46 LSD. I considered doing the 3.64, but after watching some videos of the Area 51 M5's and having a J-Spec MR2 back in the day, I didn't want to have a completely useless 1st gear ever again. I'm still annoyed that diff changes cost this much on BMW's (I paid 1/2 this installed for the 4.56's on my F350), but welcome to the BMW world.
